“ Reflection.”

                                                                 “ Reflection.”

The overall concept that inspired "Reflection" originated from a quotation in a book about a native American Indian that had a very powerful impact on my attitude and outlook. Within this book, the native American Indian had stated:“ that I see what I see is [through taking an] honest look into my soul.”  Shortly after being moved by this quote I was walking on a street and I saw a large flock of birds perched in a magnificent tree. This visual image immediately resonated directly with the quotation that had moved me and it also resonated with the attitude and outlook of my soul.

The methodology behind the work involved the meticulous use of oriental painting techniques, using China black ink on rice paper with a pronounced emphasis on acrylics in the completed work. This work expresses the magnificent tree with the exquisitely beautiful blue birds perched on its many branches. The figure of the little girl in this painting, who is ponderously reflecting on the tree and the birds, symbolizes the hungers of my soul. Like my depiction of her, my soul hungers for both knowledge and wisdom about the world. The tree in my work symbolizes my life with the blue birds symbolizing hopes for the future. Through my creation of this work I am reflecting on who and what I am at the deepest levels of my being.

A Poison Tree

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears
Night and morning with my tears,
And I sunned it with smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine -

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning, glad, I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
